Customer Service

PureVPN and NordVPN both have very responsive customer service teams. They both offer a live chat option which will answer any questions that you have nearly instantly. They both offer a more traditional email service as well, so questions or comments can be sent in via email. Obviously this is not as fast as the live chat option, but it would still be a close second in terms of access to either VPN’s customer service teams. Both services have a DIY option in their forums. You can type in phrases into there search bars or look over the information in the FAQ sections to find answers on your own terms. And finally, both teams have an extensive social media presence using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

PureVPN recommends using their live chat option as the others will take longer, but they do have them available.

Both PureVPN and NordVPN have pretty much the exact same customer service outcomes. They both have timely live chat options, email contacts, Q and A forums and social media connections. They both rank essentially the same. So for the customer service ranking I will have to say there is no substantial difference.

Pricing

PureVPN and NordVPN go back and forth on which one is cheaper as can be seen in the chart above. If you going with the month to month option PureVPN is 8.4% cheaper than NordVPN. When the comparison moves from monthly to semi-annually NordVPN is 21.8% cheaper than PureVPN. NordVPN maintains it’s advantage when we compare the annual subscription plans, albeit with a much smaller difference this time. Here is it 4.0% cheaper than PureVPN. PureVPN moves back into the limelight if you are looking to go with the biannual payment option. But the difference between PureVPN and NordVPN here is very small. PureVPN is 1.2% cheaper than NordVPN. So with the exception of the semi-annual payment plan where NordVPN is considerably cheaper than PureVPN both of these VPN services come out looking very similar in terms of cost. With the pricing being comparable in three of the four. I have found that there is no significant differentiation between PureVPN and NordVPN.

Payment

PureVPN and NordVPN both accept the standard payment options. They both accept all of the major credit cards: Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Discover. In addition to the credit cards they also both use Paypal and accept Bitcoin for payment. Where the differ is with the secondary payment options that they accept. NordVPN accepts 8 other secondary payment options, where as PureVPN accepts a staggering 47 different payment options. So, because of this significantly larger number of payment options PureVPN edges out NordVPN for payment options.

Privacy

One of the most important if not the most important options is privacy. The main reason that we purchase a VPN service is to protect ourselves online. So, with this in mind we are going to look at a few different criteria here: Encryption, Internet Kill Switch, Jurisdiction, Logging information, Protocols, Servers (number of, countries located in) and Server Types.

Criteria that PureVPN and NordVPN rate similar or the same in: encryption, internet kill switch and logging information. Both use a 256 bit AES encryption, they both have an internet kill switch and neither of them keep logs of user’s internet history. I like the way that PureVPN describes logging on their website, “Nothing stored, nothing shared.”

PureVPN performs better than NordVPN by having one more protocol available for use and having more countries available for use, 141 compared to NordVPN’s 57. NordVPN outperforms PureVPN by being domiciled in Panama, a more privacy friendly county than Hong Kong. Panama is further removed from the influence of the five eye countries and other large central governments than Hong Kong. While technically Hong Kong is a separate entity within China, it is still subject at the end of the day to the Chinese government. NordVPN has a greater number of servers available versus PureVPN. 951 compared to 750. They also have a large number of different server types that aren’t available with PureVPN including Double VPN, Onion Over VPN’s and P2P tunnels.

So, while both VPN services offer many features that compliment each others abilities, NordVPN gets the nod here because of their Panama jurisdiction, number of servers available and many different server types available.

Platform’s Supported

PureVPN and NordVPN both support the following platform’s: Windows, iOS, Mac, Linux and Android. NordVPN offers an additional one using Blackberry’s proprietary platform. But where PureVPN outshines NordVPN is with all of the additional platform’s and format’s that they support. They have a whole page on their website dedicated to the numerous other formats that they support, which can be found here. So, because of their very extensive secondary options PureVPN ranks better than NordVPN here.

DNS Leak Test

We used the following three sites to determine the if we were having a DNS Leak or not: www.dnsleaktest.com, www.dnsleak.com and www.dns-leak.com.

Before VPN Activation

PureVPN and NordVPN both showed DNS Leaks before each of the corresponding services was engaged. Which is to be expected because we haven’t done anything else to protect our privacy. The three websites each showed either the same or similar results between the two tests done before either VPN service was turned on.

After VPN Activation

NordVPN showed no leaks and only one server detected while doing the DNS Leak test. Where as PureVPN showed a decrease in the number of servers shown using the www.dnsleaktest.com website, but actually showed an increase in the number of servers detected when using the other two websites: www.dnsleak.com and www.dns-leak.com.

Summary

NordVPN absolutely crushed PureVPN here. With NordVPN not having any DNS Leaks using any of the three websites and PureVPN showing a leak with all three. It is not even comparable here. NordVPN dominated the DNS Leak test.

IP Locations

For PureVPN and NordVPN we did four location tests where we chose different servers across the globe to see if they were actually broadcasting from where they said they were broadcasting from. We used the website www.iplocation.net which is an aggregate site that brings together five different sites to check the IP Locations and compare them. When testing PureVPN we had three of the four locations where one of the servers was showing a different location than what we had picked. When NordVPN was being tested we showed that we had just one of the four locations where it had one server showing a different location than what was being shown. Both PureVPN and NordVPN hid my original IP Location.

So, here we have the NordVPN performing better than PureVPN because they only had one server that was showing a different location as compared to PureVPN where it was showing 3 servers that had a different location than the one selected.

Speed Tests

Here was a list of four different websites we used to do the speedtests: www.speedtest.net, www.speedtest.org, www.speedof.me and www.speakeasy.com/speedtest. We looked at the download and upload speeds of our internet before we launched both PureVPN and NordVPN. Then we did a test after each of the VPN’s had been turned on. We wanted to see how much of a reduction turning on the VPN’s would have on our download and upload speed.

Before VPN Activation

Before PureVPN was turned on we were seeing an average download speed of 7.83Mb/s and an average upload speed of 0.96Mb/s. For NordVPN we saw an average download speed of 7.73Mb/s and an upload speed of 1.20Mb/s.

After VPN Activation

After PureVPN was launched we saw a reduction in our download speed of 0.39Mb/s to 7.44Mb/s and a reduction of 0.03Mb/s down to 0.93Mb/s. For NordVPN we saw a reduction of 0.22Mb/s to 7.51Mb/s average to the download speed and a reduction of 0.01Mb/s to 1.19Mb/s for the upload speeds.

Summary

Both PureVPN and NordVPN saw a small reduction in there download speeds and upload speed, but there was not a really big difference between the two. So this one was ends up being a tie. Neither one was a clear winner.

WebRTC Test

We used three different web pages to check and see if we had a WebRTC leak or not. We used www.ipleak.net, www.browserleaks.com/webrtc and www.whatismyipaddress.com/webrtc-test.

Before VPN Activation

Before either PureVPN or NordVPN was activated we analyzed the three websites to see what information was being shared. And as would be expected our real location was being shown by all three websites.

After VPN Activation

Once PureVPN and NordVPN had been activated we used each of the three websites to determine what if our information was being shared. PureVPN showed our real IPv6 address on all three websites, the local IP address was not given and the public IP address was the VPN server location. NordVPN completely hid our our real information in all three tests: IPv6 address, public IP address and local IP address.

Summary

NordVPN beats out PureVPN because they had no WebRTC leaks compared to PureVPN which displayed the IPv6 location on all three websites.

Conclusion

NordVPN outperformed PureVPN in terms of there privacy metrics, the DNS Leak test, IP Locations and the WebRTC Leak Test. PureVPN had a superior performance with the payment options and platforms supported. And in terms of their customer service, pricing and speed tests PureVPN and NordVPN performed equally well.

NordVPN handily out performed PureVPN in the DNS leak test and WebRTC leak test because didn’t have a DNS Leak or a WebRTC leak. This information was leaked by PureVPN in our tests. This is one of the main reasons for having a VPN to provide you anonymity. So, while PureVPN compared better than NordVPN in some areas and comparably with them in others this the primary reason that we have to give our recommendation of NordVPN over PureVPN.
